The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders for Ville Pokka, T.J. Brennan, and Anders Nilsson. The Hawks had to make a trade to get under the salary cap, and what the team received in turn is pretty solid. Leddy had ended up being benched by Joel Quenneville on more than a few occasions, and had lost the trust of the coaching staff and organization. The Blackhawks are deep defensively, and this trade gives them even more talent in that area.

Defenseman Ville Pokka was a 2nd round draft pick of the Islanders in 2012, and has been playing in his home country of Finland ever since. Last year for Karpat of the Liiga, he scored 6 goals and had 21 assists. He was a part of the Finnish World Junior Championship team that took home the gold. The same team as Teuvo Teravainen.

T.J. Brennan, another defenseman, was drafted in the second round by the Buffalo Sabres in 2007. The 25 year-old has yet to get much opportunity playing at the NHL level, but last year in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies, he put up 25 goals and 47 assists for 72 points. He also added 115 penalty minutes. During the Calder Cup playoffs, he managed 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in 14 games. Brennan is said to play a game like Leddy’s, but has a better shot. Brennan won the Eddie Shore award last season as the AHL’s most outstanding defenseman.

Swedish goalie Anders Nilsson was a 3rd round pick of the Islanders in 2009. He appeared in 21 games for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last season. He had a rough season in which he suffered from an illness, and went 8-11, with a 2.98 goals against average, and a .899 Save Percentage.

All three will report to Rockford.

Kent Simpson was also reportedly part of the deal and will be shipped to New York. The Islanders also acquired Johnny Boychuk from the Boston Bruins in an attempt to build their defensive depth.

In other transaction news today, the Hawks have placed Peter Regin and Michael Leighton on waivers, and sent Teuvo Teravainen and Klas Dahlbeck to Rockford.
