Our second edition of the Blackhawks Milk Carton goes to the head coach Joel Quenneville.
First off Quennville is on the Milk Carton for the Brad Richards situation. All summer long Brad Richards was the steal of the free agent period, and for the first time in forever the Blackhawks had their 2nd line center. All summer long!!!!! Training camp started and we heard about all the building relationship between Richard and Patrick Kane and in the first couple of preseason games they looked pretty good. Then all of a sudden Quenneville apparently went and watched the LA series and decided Andrew Shaw needed a shot at the 2nd line center.
This has created a pathetic third line with Bryan Bickell back to his normal disappearing act in the regular season and the hard working Ben Smith on a line that doesn’t mesh or get enough ice time. Richards looks faster than Michal Handzus but there is not drive or hunger there, sure come the playoffs maybe it gets turned on a la Bickell, but during the regular season having two guys out there not playing hard isn’t going to cut and can you blame Richards he was promised all summer #88 on his wing and he ended up with Bickell! There was no reason to sign Richards to play little minutes on the third line, they could have saved 2 million and Nick Leddy and played Teuvo Terevainen in that slot.
The real reason though Quenneville lands on the milk carton is his inability to roll 4 lines anymore. The Blackhawks though down on the scoreboard were dominating the game and yet he shortened the bench again which is completely ridiculous 3 games into the season. I wish Q could go back to his interview right after the 2013 Stanley Cup when he talked about the importance of rolling 4 lines and from that point in his coaching career he hasn’t rolled 4 lines.
How does Jeremy Morin only have 5 minutes of ice time? Carcillo 9 Toews and Kane over 21 minutes and Duncan Keith 27 with David Rundblad only 9? Of course you want the stars on the ice more than the other guys but not burning them out for late in games when they count the most in April, May, and June! Why are we burning out the stars so early into the season? Roll 4 Line, Play Richards with Kane, put Shaw back with Bickell and Morin which was a very good line late last year , and reunite Ben Smith with Marcus Kruger a tandem that always works well for the Hawks.
Yes as one person on Twitter says you complain a lot for a good start to the season, but if you throw out the third period against Buffalo the Hawks have only scored 4 goals in 8 periods and they are better than that offensively! It’s going to be a long season with Quenneville it appears and he gets his first milk carton of the season!
Who is your Milk carton nominee?
