The Blackhawks squared off the Philadelphia Flyers in a Stanley Cup rematch. The Blackhawks came into the game without their starting Corey Crawford. Crawford had been lights out for the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks called upon Antti Raanta to fill in the net. In tonight’s game, the Blackhawks also welcomed back Kris Versteeg to the lineup.

The Flyers came in with a 3.66 goals against average. The Flyers came in riding high from a comeback win over the Stars.

The Stories of tonight’s game were the production of the new third line and the play of Antti Raanta.

The first period was the Blackhawks period. The Blackhawks offense that had been dormant ERUPTED! The third line with Brandon Saad, Brad Richards, and Bryan Bickell lead the charge. Saad was rewarded by going to the net and scored the games first goal. Saad had been moved down to the third line from the second line because of the return of Kris Versteeg. Saad’s play seemed to energize Bickell and Richards.

Later in the period, Patrick Kane put the Blackhawks up 2-0 after going to the net. Kane scooped a big rebound to score. As Eddie O’s stated mutiple times during games, good things happen if you go to the net. Bickell would put the icing on the first as he got a pass from Saad. Bicks roofed it to put the Blackhawks up 3-0. Trevor Van Reimsdyk was also given a lot of credit for his offensive play during the Bickell goal.

The Flyers would push back toward the end of period. Michael Raffl had two great chances in the period but could not capitalize. At the end of one, the Blackhawks led 3-0.

The second period was scoreless but the Flyers tried to claw back into the game. The Flyers outshot the Blackhawks 10-8. Raanta had to fight off Claude Giroux on several occasions during the second period. Giroux is a dangerous goal scorer as he finished third in the NHL last season in points.

The third period was dominated by the Blackhawks. They outshot the Flyers 16-13. Kane put the final missile in the Flyers. Kane scored his second goal of the game on the power play.

Raanta stopped all 32 shots he faced and recorded his second NHL shutout. The Blackhawks defeated the Flyers 4-0.

During his post game interview, Coach Quenneville stated that “he thought tonight’s game was the Blackhawks best game” thus far. Kane stated in his interview the Blackhawks need to continue to get better and they have not played his best game.

News and Notes:

  • Coach Quenneville said Crawford will probably not make the trip but they will know more tomorrow.
  • Raanta recorded his second career NHL shutout.
  • Daniel Carcillo drew two penatlies tonight in 8:46 minutes of ice time.
