Rockford to Chicago Getting Plenty of Traffic

By Cindy Crawford

I90 has been busy. The road from Rockford to Chicago is getting plenty of traffic between the BMO and the United Center. The Rockford IceHogs have been defeated twice this past weekend by their rivals from the North, the Milwaukee Admirals. The IceHogs lost their home game against Milwaukee on Friday 4-1 and even outshooting them 29-21 on Milwaukee ice Saturday, still dropped the game at 2-1.

Traffic started this past weekend as the Chicago Blackhawks recalled Joakim Nordstrom and forward Peter Regin returned to Rockford. It was also the changing of the goalies as Scott Darling drove to Chicago and Antti Raanta was sent to Rockford. I’m pretty sure this was to give Raanta ice time and tune him up “just in case” the Blackhawks should require a backup.

Net minder Antti Raanta along with the combination of Teuvo Teravainen, Brandon Mashinter, T.J. Brennan and Garret Ross providing strong offensive action pushed the IceHogs in a 3-2 win over the defending 2014 Calder Cup Champions, the Texas Stars in front of a sell-out crowd at the BMO on Sunday. Mashinter scored the first goal with an assist from Teravainen, who tallied a second assist in the second goal by Garret Ross, making TT tied for the team lead with eight assists. Third goal credit goes to T.J. with an assist to Mashinter. Every IceHog, with the exception of three, registered a shot on goal totaling 45 on Texas goaltender Jack Campbell. In his first appearance in Rockford this season, Raanta turned away 33 of 35 shots.

On Monday, the I90 traffic picked up again as defenseman Stephen Johns and goalie Antti Raanta left Rockford and headed to Chicago while IceHogs Captain, Joakim Nordstrom and goaltender Scott Darling returned to Rockford. Coach Q’s blender was churning as defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk was placed on LTI. Tuesday brought Stephen Johns back to Rockford and Wednesday Joakim Nordstrom went back to Chicago again along with Adam Clendening. Rockford’s Captain Nordstrom played in the Blackhawks 6-2 win over Dallas and has tallied eight points (5g 3a) in 14 games this season. Nordstrom finished with a 17g 16a record for Rockford last season and 1g 2a in 16 games for Chicago last season. Also on the road was goalie Mac Carruth to ECHL’s Indy Fuel but that didn’t last long after 38 impressive saves for the Fuel on Wednesday, he was reassigned to Rockford today.

This week’s Three Top Hogs are Captain Joakim Nordstrom for his continuing impressive stats on both the IceHogs and the Blackhawks, Teuvo Teravainen for his assists and because we’ve been waiting to hear his name, and last but not least Adam Clendening for his consistent playing and persistence which has also given him a chance to impress Coach Q. Circus Trip and road trips, this will be another action packed hockey weekend.
