The Blackhawks were appearing in their third outdoor game. It was their second Winter Classic. The Blackhawks have been playing well as of late. They had a comeback shootout victory over the Predators. Meanwhile the Capitals are clinging to a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and were coming in off  a loss to the New York Islanders.

After all the really cool pregame ceremonies,  the game started off with early goals by the Washington Capitals. This seems to be a trend of the Blackhawks as of late. Eric Fehr got the Caps on the board first at 7:01 gone by in the first period. The much maligned Alex Ovechkin would give the Caps a two goal lead at 11:58 past in the first period. The Blackhawks would respond with a Power Play goal from Patrick Sharp. The first period ended with the score favoring the Caps 2-1.

In the second period, the Blackhawks tied the period early with a goal from Brandon Saad. Saad was assisted by the Captain Jonathan Toews. The second period remained tied at two. In the third period the Blackhawks suffered what could be a huge loss. Kris Versteeg took a shot off his hand. Versteeg left the ice and headed to the locker room. Versteeg did not return. Versteeg has a resurgent season this year after struggling last season. Late in the period after some back in forth play, there were two questionable calls. The first questionable call was on Matt Niskanen. Nisakanen was called for boarding on Andrew Shaw. The Blackhawks failed to score on the penalty. Jonathan Toews was then given a hooking penalty. This was the second questionable call. The Caps did not miss their chance as former Blackhawk Troy Brouwer scored the game winner. The Capitals defeated the Blackhawks 3-2 in the 2015 Winter Classic.
