Hashtag Monday: Number 88 is Number 1

In case you missed it, the NHL announced today that the top NHL jersey sales for 2014 were as follows:

  1. Patrick Kane
  2. Sidney Crosby
  3. Jonathan Toews
  4. Henrik Lundqvist
  5. Alex Ovechkin

That’s right: not only did the Blackhawks nab five of the six fan vote spots for the NHL All Star Game, it also has the number 1 and number 3 jersey sales from last year.

Compared to the 2013 list, it’s a considerable step ahead:

  1. Sidney Crosby
  2. Pavel Datsyuk
  3. Jonathan Toews
  4. Alex Ovechkin
  5. Patrick Kane

The main reason given by certain news sources (Yahoo! Sports and NBC Chicago in particular) for the surge in popularity had to do with new sweater designs for outdoor games (the Blackhawks had 2 new designs in 2014 alone, due to the Stadium Series last March and the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day) and in the Penguins’ case, a third jersey.

But here’s a wild idea – it could also just be that these players are really, really good. And could be popular for various other reasons that may or may not be related to hockey.

So as a way to bring back our weekly Hashtag Monday posts for 2015, we’re asking:
