Embarrassing is the word that comes to mind when describing the Blackhawks tonight. The Blackhawks were outplayed and outworked by the Edmonton Oilers in their 5-2 loss. To the Blackhawks defense this was their third game in four nights, but still the Oilers are not a good team. Antti Raanta got his first start since December 23rd and he looked rusty.

There were two bright spots for the Blackhawks tonight, one was Brandon Saad scored two goals and gave him 101 career points. The second bright spot was Teuvo Teravainen. Teravainen seemed to be gaining confidence and Coach Joel Quenneville kept putting him out on the ice.

Here is the period recap:

1st period: Brandon Saad got the scoring started. Saad cleaned up a rebound attempt from the Jonathan Toews shot. That was Saad’s 100th career point. The lead for the Blackhawks did not last very long, less than a minute later the Oilers Benoit Pouliot scored the equalizer. David Rundblad committed a high sticking penalty and the Oilers capitalized. Derek Roy scored the power play goal after some nifty passing from the Oilers. The Blackhawks trailed 2-1 after the first.

2nd period: Saad scored in a similar fashion as he did in the first period to tie the game. Saad scored on rebound off of a Marian Hossa shot. The tie did not hold long. Jeff Petry scored for the Oilers less than a minute later. The Oilers would never look back. The Oilers lead 3-2 after two periods.

3rd period: The Blackhawks started getting more aggressive late in the period and were caught off guard. Raanta faced a two on zero breakaway. Nail Yakupov scored the fourth goal for the Oilers and his fifth goal of the season. Very late in the period, Taylor Hall sealed it with an empty netter. The Oilers won 5-2.

  • Teuvo Teravainen recorded a 14:42 minutes of ice time
  • Bryan Bickell had eight hits tonight.
  • Patrick Kane was a -3 on the night.
  • The Blackhawks did not have double digit shots in a single period tonight and were outshot 22-21.
  • Antti Raanta losses for the first time in his last six starts. He had won his last five in a row.
