On this date in Chicago Blackhawks history,

On January 19, 1991 the NHL All-star game was held at Chicago Stadium and the United States was just days into entering the Persian Gulf War and the National TV Audience witnessed a tradition from Blackhawks fans that became cemented as a Blackhawks tradition.

Wayne Messmer the original Blackhawks anthem singer sang the National Anthem on NBC before the All-Star game and the crowd cheered the whole way through with U.S.A Flags waving and sparklers lit.  It’s such a great memory and statement by Chicago Blackhawks fans here’s a video replay of the Anthem.

The Anthem cheering was started in the 80’s with most Blackhawks fans and historians pointing to the 1985 Conference Finals when the Hawks trailed the Edmonton Oilers and even though they still lost the series 4-2 the tradition began.

Today, the tradition is alive and well as you all know with the new Anthem Singer Jim Cornelison belting out the National Anthem on Game Nights at the United Center.  Since it never gets old to hear the anthem here’s Jim before Game #7 of the Blackhawks/Red Wings series in 2013.

It’s a great tradition and although critics say it’s disrespectful it started out to honor our troops on this date 24 years ago today!
