The Blackhawks finally arrived back home after what seemed like a month long road trip, they faced the Arizona Coyotes at the United Center and this is how things played out at the Madhouse at Madison Street.

The Blackhawks top line was the story of the period and they dominated the play in the opening period the only problem was Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, and Brandon Saad couldn’t get the puck into the back of the net even with tons of chances.  Actually every line played well in the first with the bottom lines owning the puck possession battles. Smith was strong in net in the first period stopping all 13 Blackhawks shots and at the end of one period we were scoreless.

The second period was a lot more open and fun to watch than the first period.  The Blackhawks finally got on to the scoreboard when Brandon Saad made a fantastic hustle play to win the puck in the corner and then Toews centered the turnover and Hossa tapped in the pass for a 1-0 lead.

The Blackhawks looked to be in total control of the game until late in the period when Patrick Kane took a very rare unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. While Kane was in the box a deflected Coyotes shot got behind Raanta and all of a sudden the game was tied up at one.  The star of the period had to be Hossa who not only scored his third goal in 2 days he was showing off his defensive skills and why he really should be a Selke Trophy Award winner.  The Reason the Hawks aren’t leading after 2 is Mike Smith who has been pretty good through 2 periods.

The Coyotes took their late 2nd period momentum and road it into the third period and they got another deflected goal and a 2-1 lead early in the final frame. The Coyotes after taking the lead really buckled down and put the game into lockdown.  The Toews line though that dominated all night long took over again when Toews turned the puck over and found Hossa for the game tying goal.  Both teams had some chances late but the game ended in a 2-2 time and headed to overtime.

The overtime was all Hawks including a 2 minute powerplay but the Hawks couldn’t get the puck into the back of the net including 2 great chances late with one of them having to be reviewed, but in the end the game went to a shootout and the Coyotes had Raanta solved and only Kane could score and the Coyotes sneak out of Chicago with a 3-2 shootout win
