When Patrick Kane was injured on February 24th, Stan Bowman was presented with a unique situation. Before the Kane injury, the Blackhawks were up against the salary cap and could not make a move at the trade deadline. When Kane was placed on LTIR, the Blackhawks had several million in cap space available. The Blackhawks were now able to address their defensive shortcomings and add some offensive pop to help ease the Kane loss.

With the Blackhawks defense struggling, Stan Bowman acquired veteran defenseman Kimmo Timomen from the Philadelphia Flyers. Timomen had not played yet because of blood clots in his legs. He was a top six veteran defenseman and could provide a veteran leadership to the team. He might be able to replace the younger David Runblad during the season and playoffs. The Blackhawks surrendered a second round pick in 2015 and a conditional pick in 2016 for him.

The second piece the Blackhawks acquired was Antoine Vermette. Vermette was going to give the Blackhawks center depth and provide another scorer. Vermette had been great at winning face-offs. He was ranked in the top five before joining the Blackhawks. Vermette was one the prime targets for teams at the trade deadline. The Blackhawks surrender a 2015 first rounder and Klas Dahlbeck in the deal.

With all of that being stated the Blackhawks HAVE NOT been getting a return on their investment.  Kimmo Timonen has appeared in 16 games averaging 11:59 minutes per game and has ZERO points! The ice time is low because the Blackhawks are easing him into the flow of the game but ZERO points is not acceptable. He is now currently injured and a HUGE question mark for the playoffs.

Vermette is a similar story for the Blackhawks. Vermette had 13 goals before the joining the Blackhawks, since joining the team, he has ZERO GOALS!!! He has three assists to give him three points. Three points is unacceptable!!! His play has been so poor that the coaching staff has tried playing Vermette on the wing to get his offensive game going. He has not played wing since he was an Ottawa Senator back in 2008! The move has not produced any results and due to Brad Richards injury, he is back at center.

The early verdict is in.. Vermette and Timomen are BUSTS!! The numbers do not lie!

The Blackhawks take on the Colorado Avs Saturday to end their regular season.
