C. Dave Manson is your answer for his 88 penalty minutes in 1989.

I would have guessed Al Secord or Keith Magnuson before Manson, but then again I would have guessed incorrectly if I hadn’t seen the answer before asking the question.

Mason is on the Chicago Blackhawks’ all-time list of penalty minutes earned, so it’s not totally shocking, but he wouldn’t be my first guess. There is no great footage of a big fight by Manson from that playoff run, but there is plenty of fight footage from his career, so here’s Manson versus Matthew Barnaby.

The best part of the teams of today compared to back then is they just don’t fight or collect penalty minutes, which for some old school hockey fans just isn’t exciting. This current batch of Chicago Blackhawks just possess the puck and put lots of shots on net. They win hockey games the new way, not the old-fashioned way, and if they continue to do that I can happily live without fights game in and game out.
