We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Faceoff series last season that we decided to do it again. In case you’re new to the series, we’ll do a roster preview as we count down the days until the Chicago Blackhawks raise their 6th Stanley Cup Banner on October 7th season opener against the New York Rangers.
We have arrived at 42 in our countdown to opening night, and we are at a jersey number that actually has been worn quite a bit in franchise history. The current Chicago Blackhawks to wear #42 is Joakim Nordstrom, and after two seasons with the team (and some with the Rockford Ice Hogs) we pretty much know what to expect from him on game days.
Joakim Nordstrom was the named Captain of the Rockford Ice Hogs, but he made his way back to Chicago, and was with the team most of the 2nd half of the season after Kris Versteeg went down with a broken wrist.
In Rockford, Nordstrom is a scoring machine, but in Chicago his role is 4th line winger and he plays the part pretty well. The main reason he even made the team at the beginning of 2013-2014 was his penalty kill play, which when teamed up with his line mate Marcus Kruger is pretty good. The problem is he just doesn’t get on the scoresheet very often, in 54 regular season games in Chicago he only has 1 goal and 5 assists. When you look at players like Andrew Desjardins, they are far more productive in the 4th line role than Nordstrom is most nights.

When you look at everyone’s line predictions for the upcoming season most do not include Nordstrom, so it will be interesting to see if he sticks in Chicago, or if he lands back in Rockford again this October. If Nordstrom does make the team he will have to beat out Desjardins and Ryan Garbutt for playing time on the bottom six which seems like a tall order for #42.
Like we said earlier Nordstrom wasn’t the only player in franchise history to wear #42 so here’s a quick list of the players to have worn 42 in Chicago Blackhawks history.
Warren Rychel (1991)
Ryan McGill (1992)
Rick Lanz (1992)
Jeff Jackson (1992)
Rob Conn (1992)

Jon Klemm (2002-2004)
Michal Barinka (2004-2006)

As you can see not a whole lot of big names have worn #42, yet we are down to only 42 days until banner raising!
