6. Detroit’s playoff appearance streak ends

The Red Wings are bringing in a new head coach, Jeff Blashill, will be without Pavel Datsyuk for at least the first month of the season and have some questions in net. The Blue Jackets, Penguins, Senators, Panthers and possibly Flyers all figure to be in contention for the final postseason spots with Detroit. The East is as cutthroat as ever and a slow start from Detroit in the first month could be enough to derail its streak of 24-consecutive postseason appearances.

Picking against Detroit is a bold bet, but it doesn’t feel like the Wings got much better during the offseason. How much longer can Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall perform at a high level? Losing Mike Babock is a downgrade no matter who replaces him.
