2.  Speaking of the Flyers…

The big story with Philly is their new head coach, Dave Hakstol. General Manager Ron Hextall hired Hakstol this past offseason in what was an unprecedented move, as Hakstol’s coaching pedigree is from the college ranks.

Hakstol coached 11 seasons at the NCAA powerhouse at the University of North Dakota. He coached Jonathan Toews at UND, and ’Hawks’ fans might have a lot of thanks to give to Hakstol for helping Toews develop into the player he is today.

The idea behind hiring Hakstol is that he can tap into the youth and college-aged kids on the Flyers’ roster. It’s not only the Flyers roster that’s in the college-aged range, but most of the NHL. Hakstol might be the first of many NCAA coaches that are hired to be NHL head coaches in the coming years.
