Chicago Blackhawks Patrick Kane Extends His Streak To 20 Games

By Sean Fitzgerald

Last regular season, Patrick Kane had a chance to become the NHL points leader. Instead, Kane’s regular season ended prematurely due to a collarbone injury. Kane had 27 goals and 37 assists in 61 regular-season games at the time of his injury and would return for the playoffs and help the Blackhawks win their third Stanley Cup championship in six years. This regular season, Kane is on a torrid pace. He is currently on pace to set career highs in goals and assists. His current career high in goals is 29 in 2013-14, and he notched 51 assists in 2007-08. His highest point total in a season is 72 points. The NHL did not see a 100-point scorer last season.

On Tuesday night, Kane continued to make history this season. Kane extended his point streak to 20 games with his 15th goal of the season, striking on the powerplay against the Minnesota Wild. The goal took place with 5:21 gone in the second period. Kane was assisted by Duncan Keith. It was Keith’s seventh assist this season. It was Kane’s 18th goal against the Minnesota Wild in his career. While the goal came in a 2-1 loss, it was still a historical moment for Kane and the Blackhawks.

He now has 18 goals and 11 assists in his career against the Wild in 33 games. Kane is now one game short of the franchise consecutive games with a point record set by Bobby Hull in 1971-72 season. In 1971-72, Hull had 50 goals and 43 assists for the season. It was Hull’s last season with the Blackhawks. Hull would leave the NHL and play in the WHA (World Hockey Association) with the Winnipeg Jets. The WHA was only around from 1972-79.

Kane is the first player to record a 20-game point streak since Sidney Crosby recorded a 25-game point streak from November 5 to December 28, 2010. If Kane surpasses Hull’s franchise record, he will still have a long way to go to catch Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky has the NHL record with a 51-game point streak in 1983-84 with the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky recorded 61 goals and 92 assists during that season.

Prior to tonight’s game, Kane had appeared in 660 regular-season games. He currently has 219 goals, 375 goals and 594 points in his regular-season career. Kane now holds the record for most consecutive games with a point by an American-born player, a Calder Trophy, a Conn Smythe trophy, is a four-time All-Star and has three Stanley Cups. The scary part for other NHL teams is that Kane is only 27 years old.
