3. Gustafsson is back and making it count. This is Erik Gustafsson’s second stint this season playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. Overall, he’s played in 13 games, and he now has 6 assists. It was his sweet pass that set up Hjalmarsson for a goal on Friday. He also picked up the secondary assist on Jonathan Toews goal on Sunday. With the Avs pressing, he managed to strip the puck along the boards and make a long pass to Andrew Shaw, who in turn fed it to Toews.
Gustafsson has been playing on the second defensive pairing with Brent Seabrook, and as you can tell from the above, he is showing that he belongs there.
2. Hossa breaks out of his slump. Has anyone ever come across someone that doesn’t like Marian Hossa? Every fan, every coach, and every player, even on opposing teams, just raves about this future hall of famer and his 2-way play.
Well, poor Hossa has been in a bit of a scoring slump lately; he hadn’t scored in the last 14 games. This was his longest regular season goal-less streak of his career. To his credit, he threw 46 shots on net during this time, with 4 of them being on Friday night against the Sabres.
His luck finally changed last night. Not only did Hossa score, but he scored twice, and came awfully close to a hat trick. He now has 492 goals in his career, only 8 away from 500.
