January 27, 2012: Chicago Blackhawks acquire F Brendan Morrison from the Calgary Flames for F Brian Connelly

Assessment: This happened within a few days of the February/March timeframe, so we’ll count it. Morrison was a versatile scoring forward who had played with the New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Anahiem Ducks, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals and Calagary Flames. Morrison appeared in 11 games for the Blackhawks. He was a minus-4 with six penalty minutes. Connelly played for the Abbotsford Heat in the Calgary Flames organization for 28 games. He recorded one goal and 15 assists. This was a depth move for depth forward that did not pan out for either side.

February 21, 2012: Chicago Blackhawks acquire F Matt Fornataro from the Tampa Bay Lightning for F Brandon Segal

Assessment: Fornataro was a depth forward from Tampa Bay. In 23 games with the Rockford IceHogs, he recorded three goals and six assists for nine points. Segal appeared in 10 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and recorded zero points. This was a depth-for-depth move that didn’t do much for either side.

February 27, 2012: Chicago Blackhawks trade F/D John Scott to the New York Rangers for a 2012 fifth-round pick

Assessment: Scott was signed by the Blackhawks to be a defenseman/forward. He appeared in 28 games, accumulating one assist and 48 penalty minutes. With the Rangers, Scott played in six games and was minus-1. The Blackhawks getting anything for John Scott is a win. The Blackhawks selected Travis Brown from the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL with the draft pick. Brown never appeared in a game for the Blackhawks. He is now in the ECHL with Brampton Beast.

February 27, 2012: Chicago Blackhawks acquire D Johnny Oduya from the Winnipeg Jets for a 2013 second-round pick and 2013 third-round pick

Assessment: The same day Scott was moved, the Blackhawks acquired Oduya to fill a void on their defense. Chris Campoli had left a hole that the Blackhawks needed to fill. Many questioned the addition of Oduya, with critics stating he would not be able to do the job. Oduya would pair with Niklas Hjalmarsson to become the second defensive pairing. He was a stay-at-home defender and complimented Hjalmarsson very well. Oduya was a solid fourth defender and helped the Blackhawks win two Stanley Cup championships. In four seasons, he compiled nine goals and 34 assists in the regular season as well as five goals and 18 assists in the playoffs. He notably assisted on Dave Bolland’s game-winning goal against Boston in Game 6 of the 2013 Cup Final.

The Winnipeg Jets later traded the Blackhawks’ second-round pick to the Capitals. The Blackhawks’ third-round pick was used on J.C. Lipon, a right wing from the Kamloops Blazers. Lipon has appeared in two games from the Jets this season.

Oduya was a piece of two championship puzzles. And people said it wasn’t a good deal …
