Patrick Kane has been a spectacular player since coming into the NHL in 2007, and on Monday night he joined a pretty exclusive club when you look at the Chicago Blackhawks history books.

With his third assist of the night, Kane collected his 400th career assist and in doing so became only the 7th player to ever wear a Chicago Blackhawks jersey to hit the milestone.  With the assist he tied Chicago Blackhawks legend Pierre Pilote for 6th all-time at the 400 assist mark.

Kane became the first player from his draft class to hit 400 assists as well as joining the exclusive club.  The other members to have hit 4oo assists in Blackhawks history are as follows.

Blackhawks 400 Assist Club

  1. Stan Mikita-926
  2. Denis Savard-719
  3. Doug Wilson-554
  4. Bobby Hull-549
  5. Steve Larmer-517
  6. Pierre Pilote-400
  7. Patrick Kane-400

Only the greatest Blackhawks have ever reached the 400 assist number, and the other thing that is pretty great about the number is the era in which he was able to pick up all these assists.  Doug Wilson, Denis Savard, and Steve Larmer although great players got to play in the 80’s when scoring was not an issue.  Look at this season for instance and the Chicago Blackhawks have been shut out in 6 games this season.  Granted Kane hasn’t scored in 9 games this year with 6 of them being shut outs.

Kane’s game has evolved a lot since entering the NHL.  He was a pass first player that has become a threat to shoot or pass on every shift.  The real advancement in his game has come this season with the addition of a real live center in Artem Anisimov and a high skilled threat on the other wing that possibly defers to Kane to much in Artemi Panarin.

Kane has assisted on 17 of Panarin’s 19 goals this season and it really could have been more especially earlier in the season when Panarin was looking like the puck was a hot potato and wanted to get it back to Kane as soon as possible.

For Kane the record books is really his to grasp as he looks like a player that will play for a long time in the NHL because you sense that he truly loves the game.

There are of course two present Blackhawks that could also join the 400 assist club in the next couple of seasons.

Duncan Keith sits at 369 career assists so he could get to the 400 mark by the end of next season, and Jonathan Toews is at 303 for his career so he would be looking at a couple more seasons before hitting the 400 assist mark.

Congrats to Kane on joining the club and we are looking for many more helpers to come!
