The Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith is one of the best defenseman in the NHL, a 2-time Norris Trophy Winner, a Conn Smythe Trophy Winner, 2-time Olympic Gold Medal Winner and 3-time Stanley Cup Champion, and he has one heck of a temper which reared its ugly head once again tonight in Minnesota.

In the first period of the game tonight against the Wild, Keith was taken to the ice, and in retaliation he swung his stick and connect with Charlie Coyle.

The match penalty brings an automatic suspension pending review, but as we all know this isn’t the first time a hit on Keith resulted in him swinging his stick at a player in anger.

Duncan Keith famously swung his stick and connected with

‘s face in Game #3 of the 2013 Western Conference Finals in Los Angeles.  That time Keith was suspended one game.  It looked like an accident, but it didn’t matter it drew blood and when the Hawks needed their star defenseman to keep his cool in one of the biggest moments he wasn’t able to control his temper.

The Chicago Blackhawks were trying to get back to the Stanley Cup Final, but the Hawks best defenseman Duncan Keith was forced to sit out Game #4.  Of course the Chicago Blackhawks were able to win the game and the series thanks to some stellar back up play of Sheldon Brookbank in Keith’s absence.

This year of course isn’t the same animal for the Chicago Blackhawks with the team struggling on defense with Keith and Niklas Hjalmarsson as the only real reliable defenseman this year, so with the Hawks trying to move up in the standings before the playoffs begin this will not be easy to overcome.  The Chicago Blackhawks need Duncan Keith in the lineup to carry the load on the ice in minutes played and defensive play on the ice.

A suspension of more than a game is likely with the history of Duncan Keith swinging his stick as a weapon before although he might not technically be a repeat offender in the eyes of the NHL.

Either way, this is a pretty selfish play by the Chicago Blackhawks star defenseman with the season coming to a close and the team not playing up to it’s full potential.
