Derek Grant, Buffalo Sabres: 26 years old, 6-3, 212 pounds, C, pending UFA signed at AAV $600k/year; 26 games played, 0 goals, 3 assists
Now we’re really getting into the bargain bin. Derek Grant was drafted in 2008 by Ottawa in the fourth round and has clawed his way to the NHL. Grant had an outstanding season in the AHL with the Stockton Heat last year, tallying 27 goals and 18 assists in 36 games. That earned him a spot on the Flames and now a contract with the Sabres.
In a small sample size, Grant has a 54 faceoff winning percentage but hasn’t been nearly as productive in the NHL as he was in the AHL. Grant has been playing fourth-line minutes with the Sabres and has yet to find his scoring touch.
But maybe this could be another Richard Panik situation? Maybe he needs to start playing with a winning team to get his groove back? I can’t imagine the Sabres are too happy with his production and they don’t seem to be a contender this year. This could be a nice depth pickup for Stan Bowman and the Blackhawks at a cheap price that has some upside.
