Jean-Claude Van Damme is known for his action, but not the type you typically see at a hockey rink. His 1995 hit, Sudden Death, was set around a Stanley Cup Final game where the Chicago Blackhawks were visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins. The team is featured throughout the movie, along with a varied selection of makeshift hockey highlights to showcase their surroundings. The story’s premise is that the arena has been taken hostage without most of those within it (fans and players alike) being aware of the threat. And if the demanded terms aren’t met, the complex will explode.
Even with all the non-hockey related content demanding your attention throughout this one, it’s hard not to keep peeking at the scoreboard in the background.
