Key 2: Do a bit more to stand out

Nicolas Beaudin was a first-round draft pick (27th overall). Even though there hasn’t been much buzz around him, at least relative to other prospects for the blue line such as Adam Boqvist or Ian Mitchell, expectations are still high. Teams don’t make it a point to pick out a player in the first round if they don’t think it’s worth using such a high pick on them.

That makes Beaudin an odd case. Nothing says he’s failing in the AHL, and yet there’s almost no commentary on his progress as a player. When you consider the amount of ink spilled about Boqvist or Mitchell, Beaudin is practically a ghost.

Here’s a clip from the IceHogs showing Beaudin scoring his first professional goal. It’s a decent play, and he followed the action well. When the puck made it’s way up the ice, he didn’t watch it. Instead, he joined, was available to receive a pass, and put in it the net.

We need to see more highlights like from Beaudin, especially defensively. This kind of play is what shows he can play at the level he’ll need to be at in Chicago. More of this, and he’ll be ready for the next level. He just needs to stand out more often.
