Zack Smith – 3.25 million UFA

Zack Smith currently finds himself on long-term injury reserve. Chances are the team is not going to re-sign him or find any potential trade partners this season for Smith. It is a little frustrating seeing Smith’s time in Chicago end the way it will.

Stan Bowman traded Artem Animisov for Zack Smith a few years back. Trading Anisimov made sense as he did not fit with the team anymore, but they basically traded him for another version of him as Smith is another older forward.

Seeing as Smith is out with an injury, it seems like Smith has already played his last game in Chicago. However, the next player on this list will get another opportunity.

Alexander Nylander – $863,333 RFA

Alex Nylander is not going to have a lot of leverage when it comes to signing a new contract. Chances are the two parties are going to settle on a one-year deal worth around a million dollars. If I were the Blackhawks, I would do my best to get Nylander under contract for more than a year as the young forward could finally break out of his shell.

Nylander has not found his scoring touch in the NHL just yet. He is one of the gamble trades Stan Bowman has made that have not paid off yet. It is only a matter of time before he is breaking out of his shell.
