Nick Leddy Trade

October 4th, 2014:

The first destination of our time machine will be right before the 2014 season began. The Blackhawks sent Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders for T.J. Brennan, Ville Pokka, and the rights to restricted free-agent goaltender Anders Nilsson.

None of these three players ever found their way into the NHL with the Blackhawks. While all three addressed some potential needs for the team if they actually did work out, none played in the NHL and made this trade an absolute win for the New York Islanders.

Leddy has been one of the Islanders’ top defensemen for years now, and he has played over 500 games with the team over the course of the last seven seasons. While I understand that the Blackhawks were going to have to move on from a player or two with the salary cap in mind and just because Leddy deflected in the game seven losing goal in 2014, I still think this was a bad trade.

Trading Nick Leddy at that time was fine, but they should have gotten more than what they did, same for the next deal on the list.
