1. The Team Needed An Elite Defenseman

Chicago has had a good mix of top four guys for the past few years. They have had NHL defensemen, but none that really stood out from the rest to make the team better. Even Keith was no longer that top guy in Chicago, well now over the past few weeks Chicago has added some size and skill to their blue line.

Chicago sent Duncan Keith to Edmonton which cleared some cap space and added a young defenseman with some upside, and in doing so they were able to clear enough room for Seth Jones. The next top guy in Chicago’s organization.

It was going to take a lot for Columbus to take Jones, even if he said he planned on testing free agency. So Chicago did have to pay the price during this trade, but luckily it did not cost them one of their next future stars in DeBrincat and Dach, yes Chicago lost Adam Boqvist, but they still have a lot of other young defensemen that can pan out into something.
