3. Jake McCabe

The Blackhawks defensive system was not great under Jeremy Colliton, but some of the mistakes that Jake McCabe and Connor Murphy were making out on the ice are on them. McCabe has six giveaways on the season so far, and that number is going to increase if the duo don’t start playing better in their own end.

While it is Jake McCabe’s name on the top here I also think Connor Murphy is someone who needs to be better. He got his contract extension this past offseason and has not been doing too great to start the 2021-22 season. Hopefully, with a new head coach in place, the duo can start to be the shutdown grouping the Hawks need on the ice.

The Blackhawks’ next batch of games should give Derek King an opportunity to shake things up a little bit. They play the Penguins on Tuesday night before having a few days off before facing the Coyotes. After the Coyotes it is the Kraken, another team that the Hawks could potentially beat.

Chicago needs to get things in check before what is arguably their biggest test of the season against the Edmonton Oilers on November 20th. The Oilers are a hot team that can overpower the Blackhawks offensively. By then hopefully, the defense is ready to go and shut down the opposition with blocked shots and physicality.
