Chicago Blackhawks: Doug Gilmour Days Until Banner Raising

facebooktwitterreddit

We had so much fun doing our Countdown to Faceoff series last season that we decided to do it again.  In case you’re new to the series, we’ll do a roster preview as we count down the days until the Chicago Blackhawks raise their 6th Stanley Cup Banner on October 7th season opener against the New York Rangers.

I’m not sure what’s harder to believe.. that the 4th of July weekend has already come and gone or that the Chicago Blackhawks are only 93 days away from hoisting their 6th Stanley Cup banner to the United Center rafters.  It still feels like just yesterday that the Chicago Blackhawks were celebrating on home ice after winning the Stanley Cup for the first time at home since 1938!

On to our countdown, only one player has ever worn #93 in Chicago Blackhawks history and that’s Doug Gilmour. Gilmour just made a 135 game pit stop in the middle of his Hall of Fame career in Chicago.  He played with the Hawks 10 years after winning the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames, and boy was he probably glad when he was traded away from Chicago during the middle of the their darkest days!  Gilmour also won a Selke while being a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

During last years Top #100 Countdown, we had Andrew Ladd as #93, here is what we had to say about him making our list.

"Andrew Ladd‘s Chicago Blackhawks StatisticsGames-184Goals-37Assists-62Points-99+/- +32Game Winning Goals-3PlayoffsGames-53Goals-8Assists-7Points-15+/- +7Game Winning Goals-2Our countdown continues with another member of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions.  It would have been fun seeing Ladd continue with the Blackhawks after the Stanley Cup, but he was part of the big purge due to salary cap problems following the first Cup in 49 years. Ladd has been a very solid Captain for the Winnipeg Jets in their rebirth as his career totals are 358 points in 610 games, but his play  from 2008-2010 is why he made the list.Ladd was not on the top lines, but part of a third line that did what a third line should do which is hit, score and annoy and he did this job very well.  It has to be a tossup between Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien between which Blackhawks player was missed the most from the 2010 team, and of course people kept floating around his name as a trade deadline deal for Bryan Bickell last year but of course it didn’t happen.  Ladd has everything the Hawks miss, with the exception of Bickell’s playoff appearances, from a power forward with the tainted word “GRIT” and leadership.Ladd’s all-time stats in Chicago aren’t that impressive but kicking down a 49 year wall is what gets him on this list!!What are your memories of Ladd as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks?"

There you have it, our countdown is complete at #93! The Chicago Blackhawks are only 93 days away from the start of their season which makes this summer feel shorter already!!
