Good morning Chicago Blackhawks fans! The Chicago Blackhawks received bad news yesterday when it was leaked that the NHL salary cap will not be going up next season.

If we could back a few summers and see what today’s salary cap is at, I wonder if Stan Bowman would have done some things differently.  My biggest thought is would he have given Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane those contracts for that amount and term if he would have known the cap wasn’t going anywhere.

Here are the responses I received on Twitter yesterday when I asked that question.

First off, the salary cap really does suck because it’s designed to not allow for dynasties.  If there were no salary cap who knows how many Cups the Hawks would have won this decade.

Secondly, Bowman has done a pretty good job with the cap except for now when he gambled that it would be approaching 80 million by now and it’s flattened out and still hovers at 73 million.  We can thank the Canadian dollar for hurting the Hawks the most right?

So now the Hawks will keep having to purge talent from the roster for the sole purpose of hitting the salary cap.  It’s going to be yet another sad summer of losing another great player due to the rules.
