The Chicago Blackhawks have a very important three game homestand this week which begins tonight when the Calgary Flames visit the United Center to complete their home and home clash of Western Conference foes.

The Chicago Blackhawks blew a game they need desperately in Calgary on Saturday night. The Blackhawks had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but they couldn’t hold on and ended up taking the loss 4-3 in overtime.

There is still time to make the playoffs although the clock is starting to turn against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks currently sit 5 points out of a playoff spot with 4 teams also fighting for that last spot with tonight’s opponent the Calgary Flames being one of those teams.

The Hawks have 30 games left to make a playoff push which is plenty of time, but they can’t be throwing away points like they did Saturday night.

The youth of the team has been the strength of the team for the past few weeks with Nick Schmaltz really taking a huge step forward with his play. He looks so much more comfortable than last year with the puck on his stick, and now he’s looking to score and not just create which makes him very dangerous.

More from Analysis

The problem is all the lines for the Chicago Blackhawks haven’t been dangerous which is a problem when you are trying to play a fast game which the Hawks are transforming into right now.  They need possession and fierce forechecking to be successful.

The defense continue to have issues once the puck is in their zone. They have a hard time controlling the puck and getting it out of the zone.  This is the biggest area that needs to be cleaned up if they are going to find long streaks of wins in their future.
