The Chicago Blackhawks ended the month of January just three points out of the final Wildcard spot. During the month, these three players made their mark.

(Third Star) Jonathan Toews

Jonathan Toews was voted the Blackhawks third star of the month by the Blackhawk Up fans on our Twitter poll.

During the month of January, Toews scored a point in eight of the 10 games played. The Blackhawks were 6-2-0 in games where Toews got a point. He also scored the overtime game-winning goal against the Senators on January 14th, 2020.

In January, Toews had 16 points. Those points consisted of five goals and 11 assists. He was a big key to the Blackhawks’ success in January. Toews won 77.2% of the faceoffs he took. That totaled to 114 wins to 88 losses.

Toews was voted the NHL’s third star of the week on January 20th.

He truly has had a great month for the team. It’s too bad they couldn’t have finished off the month with a win against the Panthers. That would have made the team just one point out of the playoffs. The fact is, they’ll need more consistent efforts from the team when the All-Star break is over.

12 of their next 14 games will be on the road. That isn’t a great recipe for success, but the Blackhawks are that team that can turn this into a positive. They’re in a fine spot right now. We’ll see what happens.

(Second Star) Dominik Kubalik

Dominik Kubalik had a great month of January. He’s had a great last two months.

In January, Kubalik scored in eight of the 10 games the team played in. He had 14 points in those games. In three of the Blackhawks’ six wins, Kubalik scored two goals. He had three games where he almost had his first career hat trick.

Kubalik has played alongside Toews as of late. Those two are creating magic on the ice. That first line is something special. After a great month, Kubalik now leads all rookies in goals scored. ‘Pro Hockey Talk Panel’ has ranked Kubalik number five among all rookies.

We believe he’s pushing close, game by game, for the Calder Trophy.

Kubalik has played in 49 games this season. In those games, he has scored 21 goals and has 11 assists. That’s a total of 32 points.

Kubalik is just four goals shy of team leader Patrick Kane. If a player is that close to Kane, they’re doing something right. Kubalik is an exciting player to watch. If he keeps up his hot streak, he can seriously score around 35 goals this season.

It’ll be refreshing for the Blackhawks to have a second player who can score goals at will, just how Kane does.

(First Star) Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane has had an amazing month of January. Kane is the only Blackhawk involved with the All-Star weekend. That gives other players time to rest. It’s well-needed rest, as the Blackhawks prepare for 12 of their next 14 games to be played on the road.

Kane hit his 1,000th career point on January 19th, 2020. He is officially the fourth Blackhawks’ player to hit 1,000 points as a Blackhawk.

Really, for the rest of his career, he’ll be chasing Blackhawks’ records. He is well on his way to another 100 point season. He already has 63 points in 51 games.

Kane is currently on an 11 games point streak. He has a point in every game he’s played in this decade. I know that’s only 10 games, but it sounds pretty cool.

Kane had 12 points in the last 10 games, 16 in the last 11. He only scored three goals in January. That isn’t much at all.

Even though he lacked scoring goals, the team still found a way to win six of their 10 games. When the All-Star break is over, the team will need more goals out of Kane. If Kane, Kubalik, and Toews can keep up their hot streaks, the team will be fine.

These next 14 games will be a big test for the Blackhawks. In my opinion, the Blackhawks have to win at least 10 of them to stay alive. They can fall any deeper and expect to make the playoffs.
