The Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning face off tonight in their third matchup of the season. There is a lot riding on this game for the Blackhawks as they look to prove they are a real contender for the playoffs.
A lot of the Blackhawks wins this season have come against teams like Detroit, Columbus, or Dallas. Chicago has not had the best track record against the three teams above them in the standings, Tampa, Carolina, and Florida. Heading into March, now is the time to surprise the hockey world and win at least a game against Tampa Bay.
The Lightning come to town on a five-game winning streak. Those five wins include two against Dallas and three against the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina is a team that has had Chicago’s number this season, and seeing how well Tampa Bay handled Carolina last week doesn’t make fans feel confident for tonight’s matchup.
The Blackhawks do not need to win tonight’s game, but they do need to stick with the Lightning for a period to two, if they can skate with the Lightning and compete then maybe the recent success is not all a dream.
The Lightning are led by Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat, and Mikhail Sergachev all of whom have at least 15 points this season. Sergachev is a rather interesting defenseman as the 22-year-old has 14 assists and is averaging 21:24 minutes of ice time a night. A team that already has Victor Hedman is so lucky to have a young Sergachev growing in the NHL.
The Lightning are a better team than the ‘Hawks, there is no denying that. So seeing where Chicago’s biggest weaknesses lie tonight will be interesting. Then if the team can work on them during the coming days maybe they will sneak away with the win on Sunday.
