3 Blackhawks records Connor Bedard could break in his career

When the Chicago Blackhawks drafted Connor Bedard first overall in 2023, he was expected to be the next franchise icon. While he hasn’t reached that status yet, he’s well on his way to achieving it. While there are unbreakable franchise records, others are unlikely, like Stan Mikita’s 1,467 points and Bobby Hull’s 604.

After going through the Blackhawks’ record book, I found three records that Bedard could break before his career is over. He’d have to play at least 1,000 games for the team to have a chance to break any of these. He’ll be at around 600 games when his current contract expires, depending on his health. That will be the biggest factor in his success. He’s had three significant injuries in his first four years, so he’ll need to be more durable if he wants to rewrite the record book.

Overtime Goals

The introduction of 3-on-3 overtime has resulted in significantly more scoring after regulation. Jonathan Toews has the most overtime goals in franchise history with 16. Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat are tied for second with nine. Bedard has three overtime goals in his young career, which is tied for the eighth-most.

A big season in overtime this year could get Bedard further up the list. With the addition of Kane and Bowen Byram, the Blackhawks could have a dangerous trio to start overtime. He’ll have two players with him that defenders will have to worry about, which should give him more room on the ice. We’ve seen how dangerous Bedard is with space on the ice. More overtime success for the Blackhawks this season will help them stay in the playoff race.

Power Play Goals

Steve Larmer has scored the most power-play goals in Blackhawks history with 153, one more than Hull and three more than Mikita. Kane enters the season fourth with 122, and Jeremy Roenick rounds out the top five with 108. Denis Savard is the only other player with 100 power-play goals, with 101. Bedard has 22 power-play goals through three seasons, so he has a long way to go.

Like all these records, longevity will be the biggest factor in getting close to any of them. The team getting better around Bedard is another. When he returns some time in November, he will be surrounded by the best talent he’s ever had, especially on that top power play unit. We’ve seen him excel on the power play before, with 11 goals in 2024-25. Kane and Byram on the top unit should help him get back into double digits even with missing the first few games.

Multi-Point Games

This will be the hardest of these three records to break. Stan Mikita had 403 games with at least two points in his 1,396 games. Kane will pass Savard for second on this list as he enters the season just two multi-point games behind his 316. Bedard has 48 multi-point games in his 219 games, so his production will need to have a significant increase, but that’s the plan. Isn’t it?

Mikita had a multi-point game once every 3.4 games. Bedard’s multi-point game rate is one every 4.5 games. Obviously, as the team around him improves and he is playing with better linemates, that rate should go up. Mikita’s rate is impressive, but when you compare it to some of today’s top stars, it’s not as unobtainable as it seems. Connor McDavid averages a multi-point effort once every 2.1 games. Nathan MacKinnon’s multi-point game rate is one in every 2.9 games. Macklin Celebrini does it once every 3.2 games. If Bedard is going to be one of the NHL’s top players, there is no reason why he can’t get into his realm.
