There are three moves the Hawks must make this offseason to return relevancy in the NHL.
Sign Mitch Marner in free agency.
The Blackhawks have been boasting a lot of cap space the past couple of offseasons, but have refused to make a major splash.
Seeing so many combinations around Bedard on the top line has made it clear, the Blackhawks must acquire a player capable of skating with Connor.
First, it will help elevate Bedard's game. He is still an amazing talent, but his sophomore season showed he cannot do it alone. He needs help.
Nazar is talented enough to skate with Bedard. Moore is fast enough. However, the team still might prefer having Nazar center the second line. The front office might want Moore to spend some time in Rockford next year, much like Frank did this season.
Therefore, with all the cap space the Hawks have, they should go out and get the best free agent available.
That means signing Marner, who is shaking off the bad rap he got in last year's playoffs with a great showing so far against Ottawa. He was also outstanding in the 4-Nations Face Off.
Marner had an eye-popping 75 assists this season to go along with 27 goals. That is the ideal linemate for Bedard. It seems like the chemistry issues Marner had with his fellow star teammates on the Maple Leafs last season are completely forgotten.
He may cost $14 million a year, but it might be worth it much like it was worth signing Marian Hossa all those years ago.
Marner does want to stay in Toronto, but the Maple Leafs reportedly wanted to trade him to Carolina for Mikko Rantanen at the trade deadline. Marner refused to waive his no-movement clause. The Maple Leafs have yet to sign him to an extension.
If Toronto does not want Marner, then the Hawks should jump at the chance to land the best free agent.
