The Chicago Blackhawks' 2024-25 season has gone about as expected--full of struggles. So far, they're 17-31-7 of the season.
You would think that the additions of Tyler Bertuzzi, Alec Martinez, Craig Smith, and bringing back Teuvo Teravainen would have made the Hawks slightly better than they were last season. However, that hasn't been the case.
As the 4 Nations Face-Off concludes with a highly anticipated USA-Canada rematch for gold on Thursday, the Blackhawks shift their focus back to the 2024-25 NHL season.
Here are three key moves the Blackhawks should do as they prepare for their first game back on Feb. 22 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
1. Give Connor Bedard more help
Connor Bedard has been the lone bright spot this season for the Hawks, leading the team with 33 assists and 49 points. But, he can't do it alone.
Frank Nazar could be Connor Bedard's possible running mate in the near future. With the speed and style and pace that he plays, he could develop into a reliable linemate.
If Nazar continues to improve, it'll be a huge boost for the rebuild. The Blackhawks have a lot of talent in their young players. However, they'll need to step up in order for this rebuild to be successful.
2. Be Sellers at the Trade Deadline
With the playoffs out of reach, Chicago should move veterans for future assets at the trade deadline.
Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones is one of the biggest trade pieces. According to Blackhawks beat reporter, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times, Jones and his agent were talking about the possibility of making a trade. However, his contract deal isn't going to be easy.

"I would like to give myself a chance to win in my career. I know that the money is not an easy thing to move, and that’s what we’re figuring out."

Other players like Ryan Donato, Jason Dickinson, and Craig Smith could also be possible trade candidates, providing depth for contenders and looking to bolster their lineup.
3. Clean Up Sloppy Play and Improve Offensive Zone Pressure
Turnovers and defensive breakdowns have hurt the Blackhawks all season. In the majority of their games, they have given up the puck before creating quality scoring chances.
To improve on this, Chicago needs to focus on preventing turnovers and maintaining better puck control. The more they do this, the more they'll generate scoring chances.
Looking Ahead
The Blackhawks won't be a playoff team this year, but they can still lay the groundwork for the future. If they help out Bedard, make smart trades, and clean up their play, they can build momentum heading into the 2025-26 NHL season.
