New Chicago Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill hopes to install winning habits during his first training camp next month.
Since the front office did not make any major offseason moves to upgrade the roster, he will have to improve the team intangibly if the club hopes to get out of the Central Division cellar. Although hiring Blashill could be the upgrade the Hawks needed all along.
Chicago Hockey Now's and CHGO podcast co-host Greg Boysen looked into the systems Blashill likes to run. Blashill prefers a 2-1-2 scheme than former head coach Luke Richardson's 1-2-2 clog the middle of the ice system.
Anders Sorenson also ran the same 2-1-2 scheme once he took over as the interim head coach after Richardson was fired. The offense got a little bit better.
The 2-1-2 fits the Hawks' strengths. The difference between Sorenson's version and Blashill's version is that the new head coach wants his players to win those board battles. He wants his guys to get the puck and start feeding passes that lead to goals.
We've got a busy show today, with @GregBoysen in for @Mario_Tirabassi.

Also, Boysen found that when Blashill was the coach at Detroit, his system allowed defenseman Moritz Seider and forward Lucas Raymond to thrive. The 2-1-2 allowed their talents, such as passing and speed, to be showcased.
The Hawks have some guys with similar skill sets, and they also have a player who directly benefited from playing with Seider and Raymond. That is why the Hawks have five players who could benefit from Blashill being the team's new head coach.
Tyler Bertuzzi
Bertuzzi's best seasons came when he played for Blashill in Detroit. Boysen pointed out that Bertuzzi often skated with Raymond.
Lukas Reichel
Reichel must redeem himself this upcoming season. He has a good chance of staying out of Blashill's doghouse if his offseason work at getting better playing along the boards pays off.
Blashill wants his forwards to win more puck battles. Reichel's ability to carry the puck up the ice could also help Blashill's 2-1-2 system hum.
Sam Rinzel, Artyom Levshunov, and Kevin Korchinski
These young defenders all have the offensive skill to join the rush in the same way Seider did for Blashill with the Red Wings.
Their inexperience might also lead to some costly turnovers, causing odd-man rushes. That will all be a part of the learning process.
