It’s a back-to-work Monday, but there is still time to catch up on Sunday’s hockey news with today’s Morning Chirps.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • Connor Bedard’s injury means the young core will have to step up right out of the gate. Justin Lynch looks at who must lead the charge to avoid a slow start to the season.
  • Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times recently wrote about Kyle Davidson’s defiance of analytics and betting big on his hunches for long-term success.
  • Congratulations to Andrew Ladd, who was inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame over the weekend.
  • On this date in 1950, the Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings completed a huge nine-player trade. The Blackhawks acquired Pete Babando, Harry Lumley, Jack Stewart, Al Dewsbury, and Don Morrison for Jim Henry, Bob Goldham, Gaye Stewart, and Metro Prystai. Babando’s last play for the Red Wings was a double-overtime goal in Game 7 of the 1950 Stanley Cup Final.
  • In 2005, the owners’ lockout that had caused the cancellation of the 2004-05 season finally came to an end. The most significant addition to the new six-year collective bargaining agreement was the first-ever salary cap.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, July 13: Ken Mosdell and Jean-Francois Berube.

NHL Chirps

  • PuckPedia has the schedule for this summer’s NHL arbitration cases. The biggest names on the list are Trevor Zegras (7/22), Jason Robertson (7/25), Cole Sillinger (7/27), and Kirby Dach (7/30).
  • All three players the Edmonton Oilers acquired from the Blackhawks last season have been extended. After Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson both re-signed with the team, restricted free agent Colton Dach got his new deal. He signed a two-year, $2.4 million contract extension on Sunday. He will remain a restricted free agent when this deal expires.
  • Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press “firmly believes” that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will be traded this offseason. He puts the odds at 95% that the former Hart Trophy winner will start the season on a new team. There are multiple reports of mutual interest between Hellebuyck and the Buffalo Sabers.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, July 13: Punch Broadbent, Bill Collins, Rick Chartraw, Bobby Carpenter, Andreas Lilja, Sheldon Souray, Dan Fritsche, and Mike Reilly.
