The Chicago Blackhawks are back in action with a matinee today against the Detroit Red Wings. I’ll have a complete game preview later this morning before puck drop, and break down all the action later in the afternoon.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • With Connor Bedard’s play to start the season, Nestor Quixtan feels he’s playing his way onto Canada’s Olympic team.
  • Kyle Bokota writes that general manager Kyle Davidson should look to make additions at this year’s trade deadline instead of stockpiling more draft prospects.
  • The Rockford IceHogs had a rough go of it with just one goal in their two games against the Milwaukee Admirals. After a 2-1 win on Friday, the Admirals completed the weekend sweep with a 2-0 victory at the BMO Center. The IceHogs have lost four in a row and have dropped to third place in the American Hockey League’s Central Division. They will be back in action later tonight against the Iowa Wild.
  • Sacha Boisvert had a big night in Boston University’s 5-4 victory over Merrimack College with four assists. He is now over a point per game for the Terriers with a goal and nine points in eight contests.
  • Adam Gajan made 32 saves to lead the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a 3-2 overtime win against St. Cloud State. He improved to 10-2-0 with a 1.70 goals-against average (GAA), .925 save percentage (SV%), and two shutouts.
  • John Mustard scored his sixth goal of the season as Providence College tied 2-2 with UConn. He has 11 points through his first nine games.
  • On this date in 1957, Ted Lindsay scored his 324th career goal to tie Nels Stewart for third place on the NHL’s all-time goals list. Glenn Hall recorded his 21st career shutout in the Blackhawks’ 5-0 win over the New York Rangers.
  • In 1969, Stan Mikita scored his 12th hat trick in a 9-0 blowout of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jim Wiste set a team record with four assists in the third period. Goaltender Tony Esposito picked up the second of his record-setting 15 shutouts during the 1969-70 season.
  • In 2015, former Blackhawks defenseman Phil Housley was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame along with Angela Ruggiero, Chris Pronger, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Sergei Fedorov.
  • In 2023, the Blackhawks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3. Kevin Korchinski became the sixth-youngest defenseman to score a goal for the Blackhawks, while Bedard became the fourth-youngest player in team history to have a multi-goal game, and the third-youngest player in NHL history to have a four-point game.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Nov. 9: Todd Gill and Zach Sanford.

NHL Chirps

  • The Calgary Flames placed defenseman Zayne Parekh on injured reserve. Head coach Ryan Huska said he is week-to-week with an upper-body injury suffered from a hit by Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno.
  • The bad injury luck continues for the Florida Panthers. Forward Jonah Gadjovich underwent surgery to repair an upper-body injury suffered on Oct. 25. He will be out of action for three months.
  • The Nashville Predators announced that forward Zachary L’Heureux will miss four to six weeks with a lower-body injury. He was just recalled from the Admirals, but has not made his NHL season debut yet. He has four goals and six points in seven AHL games.
  • The Rangers are officially off to their worst home start in franchise history. They are 0-5-1 at Madison Square Garden after losing 5-0 to the rival New York Islanders. This was the fifth time they have been shut out already on home ice. They have scored six goals in front of their home fans, with five of them coming in one game.
  • According to Frank Seravalli, St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has informed the rest of the NHL that they are open for business and ready to make a move.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, Nov. 9: Bob Neely, Bill Guerin, and Carl Gunnarsson.
