With the 2025 NHL Draft underway in L.A., the Chicago Blackhawks hold the No. 3 overall pick with a critical opportunity to add another key piece to their rebuild. It all comes down to two top-tier forwards: Michael Misa and Porter Martone.
This year's draft is shaping up to be a star-studded event with a lot of talent. Defenseman Matthew Schaefer is projected to go first overall to the New York Islanders. At No. 2, the San Jose Sharks have been rumored to select Finnish center Anton Frondell, which could leave the Blackhawks choosing either Misa or Martone.
Both players offer high-end talent, but their playing styles have different implications for Chicago's roster.
Micheal Misa: Skill and Speed
Michael Misa brings elite offensive creativity and vision. After being granted exceptional status to compete in the OHL at 15 years old, he put together a dominant season, notching 134 points (62 goals, 72 assists) in 65 games. Misa is known for his skating, hockey IQ, and two-way play.
He excels in transition and thrives in open ice — traits that would pair naturally alongside Connor Bedard. Misa is regarded as one of the top prospects in this draft class and is projected to be one of the top three players drafted.
Porter Martone: Size and Power
Porter Martone plays a different style of game. He plays a more physical and gritty brand of hockey. He also thrives in puck battles, net-front presence and the corners. At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Martone brings a power-forward element —something that the Blackhawks lack.
He posted 98 points (37 goals, 61 assists) in 57 games with the Brampton Steelheads in the OHL this past season. While not as flashy as Misa, Martone fills in a different need — size and grit, particularly on the wing. His physical presence could open space for Chicago's skilled forwards.
Roster Fit
Chicago's past draft picks have been skilled, creative players like Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, and Oliver Moore. Adding a player like Misa would continue to build around speed and creativity, giving the Blackhawks a fast-paced, offensive identity.
On the other hand, the Blackhawks need physicality, aggressiveness, and grit —especially for their forward group — and Martone fits just that.
All Eyes on No. 3
If the Sharks go with Frondell, Chicago will likely have the chance to take Misa. If not, Martone becomes the logical choice. Both players have the potential to make an immediate impact and grow alongside Bedard during the team's rebuild.
This draft pick has some serious weight. The Blackhawks have made strong adjustments to their rebuild. Getting this selection right could be the next step toward returning to playoff contention.
