The ideal situation was for the Chicago Blackhawks to come in second in the NHL Draft Lottery. Instead, they came in third.
The New York Islanders jumped ten spots to win the NHL Draft Lottery. With the lottery drawing taking place live, the Hawks had one shot on the final ball for both the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks drawings. That ball did not come up on either drawings.

The Hawks had the second-best odds of winning the No. 1 overall pick. There was a chance they could drop as low the fourth pick in the draft despite finishing with the second-worst record.
Winning the right to pick second would have been ideal because the consensus top prospect in the draft is defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Since the Hawks have a plethora of young, elite defensive prospects, they really needed a bigger forward more.
Michael Misa is considered by many to be the second-best prospect. He fits the bill of a bigger forward who can skate like the wind.
However, it looks like San Jose will be the team getting in the way again of the Blackhawks selecting the ideal player to match up with Connor Bedard. Last year, it was the Sharks winning the No. 1 overall pick and the right to draft Macklin Celebrini, who would have been great to pair up with Bedard.
San Jose will likely ruin the chance to get Misa after the Sharks ended up with the second pick. They got the second pick after Utah's combination came up in the second drawing. The Utah Hockey Club could only move up 10 spots, so that means they could only go up to the fourth pick.
Still, the Hawks are in prime position to get an elite forward prospect as the strength of this draft is at center and wing.
Boston College's James Hagens is a highly-skilled center who fits the profile the Hawks love in their forwards. However, he is the same size as Bedard and Frank Nazar. That is not a bad thing as Hagens has some serious skill. It is just the Hawks could use some more size among their prospect group.
Porter Martone has the size the Hawks need, however, his skated ability is rated below average. Skating ability is one of the four traits the Hawks love in their players.
Anton Frondell could also be an option, who is a bit bigger than Hagens.
