The Blackhawks have one move left to make to wrap up a quiet offseason

The free agent market quickly dried up, and that meant the Chicago Blackhawks were unable to make any splash moves.

Therefore, acquiring Andre Burakovsky and Sam Lafferty via trade and re-signing Ryan Donato are the biggest moves the front office has made.

It is unlikely that general manager Kyle Davidson pulls off a headline-grabbing trade.

Now that goalie Arvid Soderblom has avoided arbitration, Davidson has one move left to make.

Re-signing defenseman Wyatt Kaiser

While it would be great for the Hawks to extend All-Star Connor Bedard and emerging star Frank Nazar, it sounds like both forwards would prefer to sign their second contracts later in the season.

That leaves getting Kaiser officially back into the fold as the only move the team has left to make this offseason.

Kaiser remains the only restricted free agent the Hawks have left to sign. He was extended an offer sheet. Now, it comes down to how many years and how much money the team will commit to the young defenseman.

The Athletic's Blackhawks beat writer Scott Powers, found that AFP Analytics projects Kaiser could get a three-year deal at a $2.5 million annual average value (subscription required).

Powers wrote back in June that the deal being that long is unlikely, as both sides will probably want an earlier exit. The Blackhawks probably do want to commit beyond two years in case Kaiser's development continues to stall. Kaiser probably wants an earlier crack at unrestricted free agency in case he develops into a top-four defender like the club is hoping.

Chicago Sun-Times Hawks beat writer, Ben Pope, did indicate a deal should be worked out before training camp.

Once he does officially sign, he will join an exciting, young defensive group. Connor Murphy is the only active defenseman born in the 1990s on the roster. He is set to be a free agent after this season. It is likely he gets traded at some point during this upcoming season.

The plan seems to be moving forward with talented young blueliners such as Sam Rinzel, Artyom Levshunov, Alex Vlasic, Ethan Del Mastro, Kaiser, Nolan Allan, and Louis Crevier.

Levshunov and Rinzel have the talent to win a Norris Trophy someday. Vlasic and Kaiser could come together to round out a top-four defensive unit that wins a Stanley Cup someday.
