The Chicago Blackhawks are off today after extending their point streak to five games last night. They will return to action Sunday night when they host the Los Angeles Kings. Thursday was a crazy night around the National Hockey League with multiple hat tricks, retro uniforms, and crazy comebacks.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • The Blackhawks used to find ways to lose games, but under Jeff Blashill, they are finding ways to win them. In case you missed it last night, check out my Postgame Musings for my thoughts on the 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
  • Every Shift returns for a fourth season, with the first episode debuting on Oct. 29.
  • As much fun as the start to this season has been, it’s only going to get better. Imagine when Roman Kantserov gets to Chicago! He had another goal and assist on Thursday, giving him 12 goals and 20 points in 19 games. He now has a two-goal lead for the most in the KHL this season. Former Minnesota Wild prospect Sam Anas is second with 10.
  • On this date in 1976, Bobby scored two goals in a 7-2 win over the St. Louis Blues to become the first defenseman in NHL history to have 900 career points. The legendary blueliner needed only 638 games to reach his historic milestone.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 24: Ray LeBlanc and Jamal Mayers.

NHL Chirps

  • The San Jose Sharks ended their 17-game losing streak last night by beating the New York Rangers 6-5 in overtime. The wild affair included a hat trick by Macklin Celebrini and former Blackhawk Taylor Raddysh. There was also a nasty heavyweight fight between Matt Rempe and Ryan Reaves. Rempe never returned after the tilt due to an upper-body injury. The Rangers are 0-5-0 on home ice to start the Mike Sullivan era.
  • Logan Cooley scored a first-period natural hat trick after assisting on the opening goal of the game to lead the Utah Mammoth to a 7-4 win over the St. Louis Blues. Utah has won five in a row, while the Blues fall to 1-3-1 at the Enterprise Center.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche went retro last night, wearing throwback uniforms from the Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques. The Nordiques (Avalanche) erased a 4-1 Whalers (Hurricanes) lead to force overtime, but lost in a shootout. Personally, I think these are the only uniforms these two teams should wear when they play each other.
  • Former Blackhawk Matthew Highmore was recalled by the New York Islanders yesterday. He was not in the lineup as the Islanders extended their winning streak to four games by blowing out the Detroit Red Wings 7-2.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 24: Harold Snepsts, Mike Rogers, Jim Peplinksi, Clarke Wilm, and Tony DeAngelo.
