Morning Chirps: More talk from Davidson, Ducks expensive offseason to continue

Blackhawks Chirps

• It’s rivals & villains week for our NHL sites, and Spencer Lazary looked at who will be the Blackhawks’ biggest rival once they are back in contention. Let’s hope that starts this season!

• Maya Smith says one certain stat comparison shows just how great Connor Bedard’s new contract is for the Blackhawks.

• Ryan Gagne breaks down The Athletic’s latest prospect rankings and how well the Blackhawks fare in them.

• Richard Jelinek jumped into the hockey time machine to review the three biggest trades in Blackhawks history.

• General manager Kyle Davidson joined the Mully & Haugh Show on 104.3 The Score and talked about a possible Patrick Kane return among other hot topics.

• On this date in 1957, the Blackhawks acquired Ted Lindsay and Glenn Hall from the Detroit Red Wings for forwards Forbes Kennedy and Johnny Wilson, defenseman Bill Preston, and goaltender Hank Bassen. Lindsay scored 29 goals and 84 points in his two seasons in Chicago. Hall earned the name “Mr. Goalie” while playing in the crease at Chicago Stadium and became one of the greatest netminders in NHL history.

• In 1994, the Blackhawks signed enforcer Bob Probert after he played the previous nine seasons with the Red Wings. However, Chicago fans had to wait a full year before they could see him play, as he was made inactive by the league while he entered rehab for substance abuse. When he returned, he scored 19 goals and 40 points in his first season. He ended up playing 461 games for the Blackhawks before calling it a career.

NHL Chirps

• Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic broke down the 10 best contracts in the NHL. To the surprise of nobody, there are no Blackhawks on this list.

• Pat Verbeek really screwed himself by trying to squeeze every penny out of Leo Carlsson, which allowed him to sign an offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers. On a recent episode of the Campbell vs Gallo show on TSN 690 in Montreal, Anthony DiMarco reported that Cutter Gauthier’s next contract will come in at $16 or $17 million – between Carlsson and Bedard. What an expensive summer for the Ducks.

• Danton Heinen re-signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets, getting a one-year, two-way contract. He was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins last December in the Yegor Chinakov trade. He had five goals and 10 points in his 33 games with the Blue Jackets.

• Utah Mammoth defenseman John Mario joined the guys at NHL Tonight to discuss his new eight-year contract extension.

• NHL Birthday Roll Call, July 23: Red Dutton, Dmitri Khristich, Andrew Casseles, Scott Clemmensen, Randy Jones, Dmitry Orlov, and Kasperi Kapanen.
