Happy Friday! We made it to the weekend, and the Chicago Blackhawks prospects will be on the ice in seven days. Today’s Chirps include two player previews, a bold prediction, and a former Blackhawk signing in Europe.
Blackhawks Chirps
- Yesterday, we started previewing and projecting some key players for the upcoming season. Todd Welter kicked us off by telling us how Louie Crevier logically has an inside track to making the NHL roster.
- I profiled Frank Nazar and explained how his hot finish to last season and the new coaching staff can lead to a big season for the second-year pro.
- Speaking of Nazar, he was a guest on Daily Faceoff’s Morning Cuppa Hockey with Jonny Lazarus and former Blackhawks analyst Colby Cohen. Among the topics discussed were Nazar’s first goal at Michigan and debunking the narrative that the San Jose Sharks have a better vibe than the Blackhawks.
- Charlie Roumeliotis of WGN Radio made a bold prediction for the upcoming season about Sam Rinzell winning a particular postseason award. As we get closer to the start of the regular season, the Blackhawk Up crew will make our own predictions.
- Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Sept. 5: Dave Dryden, Ryan Potulny, Craig Smith, and Lucas Wallmark.
NHL Chirps
- The National Hockey League’s trade deadline is one of the favorite days for fans. It’s a stressful day for reporters, but the fans love the trade action. According to Nester Quixtan at Puck Prose, the changes in the new collective bargaining agreement might lead to a quiet trade deadline because of the salary cap carrying over into the postseason.
- Staying on Puck Prose, players and management are reacting to the reports of an 84-game regular season schedule coming next year.
- Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman is coming off a disappointing season after signing a big contract extension. He recently told Scott McLaughlin of WEEI that he is a “completely different human being” heading into the new season. However, Causeway Crowd’s Nate Duffett wonders if Bruins fans should buy what Swayman is selling.
- Former Blackhawks forward Tanner Kero is heading overseas. He signed a one-year deal with Kölner Haie of Germany’s DEL. He initially signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent out of Michigan Tech in 2015. He scored eight goals and 22 points in 72 games over three seasons in Chicago.
- The Colorado Avalanche will be down a defenseman to start the season. They announced blueliner Jacob MacDonald will be out until February or March after undergoing hip surgery on Tuesday. The 32-year-old spent all of last season with the Colorado Eagles in the American Hockey League, scoring a career-high 31 goals and 55 points in 63 games. He won the Eddie Shore Award for being the AHL’s top defenseman.
- NHL Birthday Roll Call, Sept. 5: Murray Henderson, John Ferguson, Bill Hogaboam, Stan Jonathan, Don Maloney, Filip Chytil, and Max Sasson.
