Blackhawks Chirps

  • The Blackhawks made too many mistakes, and on the road against a team like the Winnipeg Jets, that usually costs you the game. Check out my Postgame Musings for my thoughts on the 6-3 loss.
  • With the Blackhawks in Canada, of course, Connor Bedard was surrounded by the local media in Winnipeg. His answer to being asked if he wanted to play for Team Canada at the Olympics should not surprise you at all.
  • On this date in 1945, George “Wingy” Johnston made his return to the lineup after two years of military service. He scored two goals in the Blackhawks’ 5-1 win over the New York Rangers. The Chicago Stadium was packed with 18,877 fans, which was the largest crowd in NHL history for a weeknight game.
  • In 1987, Troy Murray and Denis Savard scored the fastest two shorthanded goals in team history, just 12 seconds apart, in a 6-5 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • Twenty years later, Jonathan Toews scored a goal in a 5-4 victory against the Dallas Stars. The goal extended his point streak to 10 games, the second-longest point streak by a rookie to start his career in league history.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 31: Eric Nesterenko and Nick Foligno.

NHL Chirps

  • The big news of the day was Martin Necas signing an eight-year, $92 million contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche. According to Elliotte Friedman, $60 million of the deal is signing bonus money. Additionally, Necas has a no-movement clause in effect through the 2032-33 season.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders last night, but it came with a cost. Star forward Seth Jarvis took a shot off his ankle in the third period and needed help off the ice. After the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour said, “It doesn’t look great” for him. Add Jarvis to an already crowded injury list that includes Jaccob Slavin, K’Andre Miller, and Shayne Gostisbehere.
  • Few players are as hot in the NHL as Morgan Geekie these days. He scored in his sixth straight game to open the scoring in the Boston Bruins’ 4-3 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres.
  • Tyler Seguin played in his 1,000th NHL game last night. He was held off the scoresheet in the Dallas Stars’ 2-1 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 31: Newsy Lalonde, Bucko McDonald, Phil Goyette, Bob Manno, Risto Siltanen, Mats Naslund, Paul Cyr, Tomas Plekanec, Steve Eminger, and Evgeny Svechnikov.
