Kevin Korchinski is among the biggest wildcards in the Chicago Blackhawks prospect system at the moment. His future with the club is up in the air as his development has undergone its fair share of adversity so far. The 21-year-old defenseman is currently playing with the Rockford IceHogs in his second season in the AHL and has hardly spent any time with the big club this year.
While it is true that defensemen tend to follow a more complicated development path and that their road to becoming full-time players in the NHL can take longer, Korchinski's longer-than-expected journey is a concern for Blackhawks management. It raises the question of whether he will be part of the Blackhawks' long-term future.
What do the Blackhawks do with Korchinski?
Korchinski's career in the big leagues was immediately tested when he was forced to play in the NHL during the 23-24 season because of a rule that prohibited teenage Canadian major junior players from playing in the AHL (this rule has since been adjusted). With hindsight, perhaps it would have been better if he had spent another season in juniors, as he clearly was not yet ready for the NHL level. But Blackhawks management felt he had nothing left to prove in the WHL.
After a tricky rookie campaign where Korchinski showed signs of promise but mostly struggled defensively on a poor Blackhawks squad, Kevin spent the 24-25 season primarily with the Rockford IceHogs. The thought of taking a step back in competition would allow him to work on his game without the pressure of the Chicago spotlight.
While Korchinski showed some improvement, competition for spots on the 25-26 Blackhawks defensive core has been tight with a plethora of young defenseman to go up against. The Chicago brass thought it would be better for him to spend another year in Rockford, where he could play top-pair minutes, rather than munching for scraps in a 6-7th dman role with the big club.
However, his season has looked quite similar to last year's campaign. He has not yet made those gains to give the Blackhawks coaching staff confidence that he can play up there. It is very telling that even after the Connor Murphy trade, GM Kyle Davidson opted to call up Ethan Del Mastro from Rockford and send Korchinski back down to the minors.
So what happens with Korchinski in the 26-27 season? His entry-level contract will be coming to an end. What is that deal going to look like? One would think another season with the IceHogs is not a viable option; he surely has to assert himself on next year's team.
Korchinski will be 22 years old and entering his fifth season since being drafted seventh overall in 2022. If he still can't earn himself a permanent spot in Chicago, serious questions have to be asked about his future here. On a defensive core already including the likes of Alex Vlasic, Sam Rinzel, Arty Levshunov, Wyatt Kaiser, and Louis Crevier, where does Korchinski fit into this mold?
He will probably have to compete with Del Mastro, although his ELC will expire as well. And that's assuming Matt Grzelcyk is not extended, and the Blackhawks do not go out and add any veteran defenseman in free agency or via trades to complement the youth, with Vlasic being the oldest of the bunch at 24.
Once again, Korchinski will have to claw for ice time on a defensive core where many guys have passed him in the pecking order. Thinking ahead with this conundrum, does Kyle Davidson consider moving the young defenseman over the offseason? If he does not think Korchinski has shown enough evidence that he will work out here, should he consider trading him while he still has value, receiving assets in return that can help the Blackhawks more in the present? Insider Elliotte Friedman speculated over the 2026 trade deadline on whether this possibility has traction.
With Korchinski being the first draft pick of the Davidson rebuild, this is a player he will likely want to remain faithful to. It was easier for Kyle to move on from Lukas Reichel, for instance, since he was a draftee of the previous administration.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Korchinski over time. It is difficult to forecast where he fits into the big picture of this organization's plans right now, but things can change. In the meantime, it is up to him to step up his game and prove his worth to the higher-ups.
