Blackhawks Chirps

  • Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times ranked the Blackhawks’ prospect pool now that so many recent draft picks find themselves in the NHL.
  • We had a great CHGO Blackhawks Podcast yesterday at the Helping Hands Network gold tournament. We got to speak with Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill, former captain Nick Foligno, and two-time Stanley Cup champion Bryan Bickell.
  • On this date in 2020, the Blackhawks' playoff run inside the Edmonton bubble ended after a 4-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of Jonathan Toews and Alex DeBrincat. Max Pacioretty scored in the final minute of the first period before Mark Stone tied the game in the opening minute of the middle frame. Patrick Kane restored the lead three minutes later, but that was the last goal of the season. Future Blackhawk Alex Martinez tied the game with a power-play goal. Early in the third period, Alex Tuch scored the series-clinching goal.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Aug 18: John Sleaver and Forbes Kennedy.

NHL Chirps

  • Anaheim Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek can’t wait for the regular season to start so we stop talking about how awful his offseason has been. He still hasn’t signed Cutter Gauthier, and this sounds like it’s going to get messy. According to a report from Paul Shaheen, he rejected a four-year, $13 million offer from Verbeek. It’s believed that Gauthier is looking for something between Connor Bedard’s $15 million and Leo Carlsson’s $18.8 million.
  • According to the Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch, the Ottawa Senators and Drake Batherson are not close to a new contract at this time. If they don’t agree to terms before Sept. 15, an eight-year max deal would no longer be an option.
  • Former Blackhawk Josiah Slavin will return to the Chicago Wolves after signing a two-year AHL deal with the club. He’s served as the Wolves’ captain for the last two seasons, scoring 18 goals and 46 points in 135 games.
  • Speaking of former Blackhawks, Ben Smith is joining the coaching staff at Boston College. He was part of the Boston Bruins’ development staff before deciding to return to his alma mater.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, Aug. 18: Bob Woytowich, Geoff Courtnall, Petr Cajanek, Peter Worrell, Ossi Vaananen, and Scott Perunovich.
