Blackhawks' Roobroeck, Villeneuve added to World Junior Summer Showcase

Chicago Blackhawks prospects Ryan Roobroeck and Xavier Villeneuve have been named to the World Junior Summer Showcase roster for Team Canada. This is a determining factor in which players are prepared and ready for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, and the players who outperform others will be named to the official roster at a later date.

The training camp will feature practices among players from Canada, the United States, Finland, and Sweden. Those will take place July 26-August 1 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This will be the first step in creating a well-rounded roster to compete in the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship to be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada from December 26 to January 5.

"We're excited to announce the 32 players who will attend the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor as we begin our preparation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship." Canada national junior team general manager Allan Millar said. "This is an important opportunity for our staff to evaluate a talented group of players against top international competition while continuing to build our identity as a team. We're looking forward to seeing this group compete and bringing this showcase to Windsor in front of passionate Canadian hockey fans."

The entire roster and process were made by some of the more important people within the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Those people include Alan MIllar (Tottenham, Ontario), general manager of the National Junior Team, alongside Byron Bonora (Brooks, Alberta), Program of Excellence (POE) head scout, and Dave Brown (Niagara-on-the Lake, Ontario/ Erie Otters), assistant general manager of the National Junior Team, Scott Salmond (Creston, British Columbia), Hockey Canada's senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations, and Benoit Ray (Sudbury, Ontario), director of hockey operations, also provided input.

Roobroeck and Villeneuve ready to impress coaching staff

Left winger Roobroeck, a 6-foot-4 and 215-pound forward, is ready to take things up a notch. After being selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2026 NHL Draft, he knew this was the first step of a long process. This camp could do wonders for both his development and his future success in Chicago. Plenty of scouts and coaches will be on hand to watch their prospects and how they react to pressure situations.

Roobroeck was with the Niagara IceDogs of the OHL last season, scoring 30 goals and potting 58 points in 49 games. He was drafted by Chicago last month, shortly after he was traded to the Guelph Storm on June 19.

He will be one of eleven Ontario Hockey League (OHL) players who will take part in on-ice sessions, scrimmages, and a trio of exhibition games against Finland, the United States, and Sweden.

Roobroeck's strengths as a player include his size, his shot, and his goal-scoring ability. He can also score in tight spaces and is always around the net. His OHL totals include 99 goals and 97 assists for 196 points in 176 games.

Villeneuve has also impressed during his short career in the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He won the Emile Bouchard Trophy as the league's best defenseman after posting 12 goals and 50 assists for 62 points in 61 games during the 2024-25 season. His career totals in the QMJHL include 26 goals and 117 assists for 143 points in 152 games while playing for the Blainville-Boisbrand Armada, quite impressive for a defenseman.

Villeneuve also won a gold medal at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship with Team Canada, winning 7-0 over Sweden in the final. Villeneuve is one of the more talented defensemen in the QMJHL, and he will have to outplay a number of players at his position to make the roster. With a dominating performance at the training camp and the 2027 IIHF World Championships, he could elevate his stock quickly. He looks to be a future power-play quarterback who leads the rush. Villeneuve was drafted by the Blackhawks with the 34th pick in the 2026 NHL draft, while Chicago traded up to the 35th overall pick and selected Roobroeck.

Both Villeneuve and Roobroeck know their destinations for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Villeneuve will head to Boston University and Roobroeck will begin the season with Guelph after he was traded this offseason.
