Blackhawks Chirps

• Let’s welcome our newest contributor, Brooke LoFurno! She spoke with prospect A.J. Spellacy at development camp and shared what they talked about. You’ll be seeing a lot more of Brooke, as she will be taking over for me as Blackhawk Up’s site expert on Sept. 1.

• Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times recently dove into the high-risk/high-reward selection of defenseman Xavier Villeneuve.

• The Athletic’s Scott Powers reported that Mike Doneghey was promoted to vice president of amateur scouting, a step up from his previous position of director of amateur scouting.

• We discussed that the 2023 draft class will go down as Kyle Davidson’s best on this CHGO Blackhawks Mini Pod.

• On this date in 2020, the Edmonton Oilers evened up their Qualifying Series versus the Blackhawks with a 6-3 victory in Game 2. Like we’ve seen many times, Connor McDavid put the team on his back, scoring two goals in the first four minutes of the game before finishing off his hat trick later on. The Blackhawks got the deficit down to 4-3 thanks to goals from Patrick Kane, Slater Koekkoek, and Olli Maatta, but couldn’t draw any closer. Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat each had two assists in the losing effort.

NHL Chirps

• St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas sat down with Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic. Despite being in trade rumors for quite some time, he said he was never asked to waive his full no-move clause. Rutherford reported that after multiple conversations with new general manager Alexander Steen, Thomas and the Blues are back on the same page again.

• Utah Mammoth prospect Caleb Desnoyers suffered a lower-body injury at the World Junior Summer Showcase after Wyatt Cullen fell into his legs. Team Canada head coach Misha Donskov did not have an update on his condition after Saturday’s game.

• The NHL Network revealed its list of the Top 20 Wingers in the NHL. Two former Blackhawks, Artemi Panarin and Brandon Hagel, made the cut.

• NHL Birthday Roll Call, Aug. 3: Marcel Dionne, Mark Lamb, Sandis Ozolins, Dominic Moore, Jordan Leopold, Ryan Carter, Shea Theodore, Bokondji Imama, and Jackson Blake.
