Blackhawks Chirps

  • We’ve talked a lot about what this offseason could look like since the season ended, and Richard Jelinek added his thoughts on what Kyle Davidson needs to do.
  • Our newest contributor, Jordan Manning, thinks Davidson should check in with the New Jersey Devils on the availability of one of their defensemen.
  • Teuvo Tervainen’s IIHF World Championship is over after just one game. He suffered an undisclosed injury in Friday’s win over Germany, which saw him pick up two assists. His roster spot is being taken by Eemil Erholtz. Finland improved to 2-0 at the IIHF World Championship with a 4-1 win over Hungary. Former Blackhawks defenseman Henri Jokiharju had an assist. Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, who missed the entire NHL season, had a pair of helpers.
  • In other World Championship action, Austria beat Great Britain 5-2. Slovakia beat Norway 2-1 in the first game for both teams. Canada also improved to 2-0 by rolling past Italy 6-0. Macklin Celebrini had a big game with two goals and an assist. Dylan Holloway and Ryan O’Reilly both had a goal and an assist.
  • In 1995, Randy Wood was the overtime hero in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 5-4 win to force a Game 7 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Dirk Graham opened the scoring before Toronto scored for in a row to take a 4-1 lead early in the third period. Denis Savard, Joe Murphy, and Brent Sutter led the Blackhawks’ comeback to force overtime.
  • In 2009, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Blackhawks 5-1 in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Adam Burish scored the game’s opening goal before Kris Versteeg tied the game 2-2 with a power-play tally in the third period. The Red Wings scored three unanswered goals to strike first in the series. Former Blackhawk Daniel Cleary scored a pair of goals in the victory.
  • In 2015, after a 10-day layoff, the Blackhawks finally started the Western Conference Finals against the Anaheim Ducks. There was some obvious rust as the Blackhawks lost 4-1, as Brad Richards had their lone goal in the final minute of the second period.

NHL Chirps

  • The Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens treated us to yet another insane game last night. In Game 5, the Canadiens allowed three goals on the first four shots and won 6-3. In Game 6, the Sabres allowed three goals on the first four shots and won 8-3. Rasmus Dahlin scored only 36 seconds into the game, but Montreal answered the goals on three straight shots, ending Alex Lyon’s night. Jason Zucker scored about three minutes after the goalie switch to begin the comeback. The Sabres dominated the second period, scoring four times before adding three more goals in the final frame. Game 7 will be back in Buffalo on Monday. The road team has won four of the six games in this series, while the Canadiens already have a Game 7 road win this postseason. The winner gets the Carolina Hurricanes starting on Thursday.
  • The Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights won’t begin the Western Conference Finals until Wednesday. That’s great news for the Avalanche because, according to Jesse Montano, Cale Makar, Josh Manson, Brent Burns, and Artturi Lehkonen are all dealing with minor injuries, but are expected to play in Game 1.
  • Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that the Minnesota Wild tried to acquire center Robert Thomas from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline. Bill Guerin made a hard push with a package that included goaltender Jesper Wallstedt and forward Danila Yurkov.
  • With the Blackhawks in need of a veteran physical defenseman, some wondered if they’d make a run at Jacob Trouba. However, Elliotte Friedman reported that Trouba and the Ducks have had contract extension negotiations, but have not been able to close out a deal.
