The season may be over for the Chicago Blackhawks, but it is not over for Anton Frondell. Team Sweden announced its lineup today for the 2026 IIHF World Championship, and the roster included Chicago forward Frondell. He joins a flurry of Blackhawks that will be participating in the Worlds.
This will not be the first time Frondell has represented his native country this season, as he also played for Sweden at this year's World Junior Championship and the Fortuna Games. His play in the WJC was a big reason why the team took home the gold medal, as he amassed five goals and three assists in seven games.
He will be looking to go for the sweep and help Sweden win gold in the Worlds. This tourney should be a good opportunity for him to continue his development and gain confidence heading into his rookie season in the NHL next year.
The Worlds could have a similar impact on Frondell as it had on Nazar
Frondell having a strong tourney with Sweden could be big for him and help generate momentum that he can carry over into the summer. This tournament has had a positive impact on many young Blackhawk players of this core in the recent past.
One of those players is Frank Nazar, who suited up for Team USA at the World Championship last year and was their top producer. He exploded in the tourney with six goals and six assists for 12 points in 10 games.
Nazar was able to ride the wave he gathered from that tourney and translate that into a hot start to this latest NHL campaign. He got off to a sizzling start this year; he was playing at a point-per-game pace through the first month of the season. His game trailed off a bit as the year wore on due to multiple injuries.
If Frondell can have a similar impact on this Swedish group, perhaps he can bring that into next season. He should be one of the favorites in the Calder conversation for rookie of the year based on the way he performed in his brief Blackhawks showing so far. He recorded three goals and six assists for nine points in 12 games during his initial taste of the NHL.
Another factor in Frondell's favor is the amount of experience he already has playing against men as opposed to fellow kids in the junior levels. Perhaps his strong start with the Blackhawks should not be a surprise; he recorded 20 goals at the SHL level this year as an 18-year-old.
The Worlds will be another opportunity for Frondell to play against tough competition and showcase his talents on the big stage at the International level. The extra hockey to play in the offseason should be good for the teenager, as he will be counted on to be a key member of this team.
A nice showing will be good for Frondell beyond his NHL ventures as well, for there is a good chance he features for Sweden when the next Olympic run comes around in 2030.
